Ingredients

  • 1 baguette, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 8 oz smoked salmon, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp capers, drained and roughly chopped
  • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges for garnish
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F and position the rack to the upper-middle position. Slice your baguette diagonally into 1/4-inch rounds, aiming for about 24-30 slices total for even toasting.
  2. Arrange bread slices on a large baking sheet in a single layer without overlapping. Brush both sides generously with olive oil, then mince your garlic cloves directly onto the bread for maximum flavor infusion.
  3. Toast for 8-10 minutes until the bread turns golden brown and becomes crispy throughout. Watch carefully during the last 2 minutes to prevent burning, as ovens vary significantly in temperature accuracy.
  4. While bread cools slightly, combine your softened cream cheese with minced garlic, fresh dill, lemon juice, sea salt, and black pepper in a small bowl. Stir in the Dijon mustard for subtle depth and spread this mixture generously on each toasted crostini round.
  5. Layer fresh zesty smoked salmon crostini by carefully placing folded smoked salmon pieces on top of each cream cheese base. The folded technique prevents salmon from sliding around and creates an elegant presentation.
  6. Garnish each crostini with a small mound of capers, thin red onion slices, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley. Add a tiny lemon wedge next to each piece for visual appeal and optional fresh squeeze.
  7. Serve immediately at room temperature for best flavor, or refrigerate for up to 2 hours before serving. The combination of textures and temperatures remains optimal when not served ice cold.
